Peter Obi claims there's no justification for Nnamdi Kanu's ongoing detention.

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, and other freedom fighters who are incarcerated should be released, according to a request made by Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the general elections of 2023.

Obi stated that the IPOB leader should not be kept in custody, especially when he has been freed by national courts.

The former governor of Anambra State issued this appeal while addressing reporters on Saturday in Onitsha, Anambra State. He also urged officials to step up their efforts to combat insecurity, warning that if nothing was done, the nation might descend into failure.

"I don't see any reason for his continuous detention, especially since the courts have granted him bail," stated Obi, who also addressed other topics. The court is supreme over the government.

"We must value and coexist with the rule of law as a complex asset. I would like to take this opportunity to beg the Federal Government to make sure that everyone who is in comparable circumstances is freed and talked about.

"We should not be acting arbitrarily or outside the law; we live in a democracy."

He bemoaned the rising levels of insecurity in the nation, warning that if immediate action wasn't taken to improve the situation, Nigeria will eventually collapse.

He said, “The primary work of government is the security of lives and property. It is the foundation on which people can live in any nation because no one can stay in an insecure place.

“It is worrisome what is happening in Nigeria with the news of killings, abductions, and other vices that have made Nigeria one of the most insecure places on the earth. In fact, it is leading to a failed nation.

"While I applaud the government for its efforts thus far, more needs to be done. Leaders in the South-East must unite to combat this. The governors in the region must come together to address it. This includes closer collaboration on the economic agenda. We hope to see the governors from the South-East work together more closely and to unite other groups in the zone."
Obi voiced his disapproval with the current protests in Kenya, stating that any nation would suffer when its property and assets are destroyed by the government.

"While I support nonviolent protests, I oppose rioting and the damage of government property and assets when the resources needed to restore them are still in short supply.

"Peaceful protest is permitted, but it needs to have a purpose and not only be done by some people for their own selfish gain. It needs to be aimed and stated correctly.
"I remember telling individuals that I preferred to deal with the leadership when they indicated they were protesting police violence. Our leaders cannot be evil if they are good. The leadership is the issue. When leaders exhibit competence, capacity, and moral leadership, their agents will be more likely to emulate them.

"I would like to take this occasion to demand the release of everyone detained due to any form of protest. Let them all be released right away, whether they are journalists, freedom fighters, or simply demonstrators against End-SARS exercising their right to free expression.
We live in a democratic nation where everyone is guaranteed the freedom to express themselves. They must be given our attention since they too have the right to peacefully demonstrate. Since it is a democratic country, we should pay attention to those who express dissatisfaction. He went on, "We ought to quit acting autocratically and act as though this isn't a democratic nation.

When asked if he had any plans to team up with other politicians to create a mega-party in order to unseat the All Progressives Congress, Obi replied that he did not.
"I would prefer to say that I am more particular about how the impoverished Nigerians can feed," he remarked. I would want to discuss issues that now affect Nigerians. Elections are our primary concern as politicians, but that is not my goal. I'm referring to ways that we can lower the cost of food.

"Our people are starving to death. How can we improve the lives of the impoverished Nigerians? How can we increase income? How can we lift people out of poverty?" Our focus should be on that rather than creating a massive party.

But I'm fine for it if creating a mega-party allows me to offer all of the things I've described. However, I will say no if it is for state capture, meaning politicians may seize power and carry on with the rampant consumption that we are witnessing today. However, I will agree if it means putting the nation on a production-based economy.
